Our new Home Racer, an autonomously driving robot, has been created in the course of our Summer Camp 2017. The project’s goal was to create a robot that can navigate autonomously in a known but changing environment in order to make it ready for a potential daily use.
As a first step, the robot creates a map of its surroundings using a 2D-laser scanner attached on top of the chassis. A specifically developed app is then visualizing the map and offers users the possibility to set a goal position for the robot on this map. Using SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) the robot can localize itself in an already created map or when driving in the continuously updating map. When the robot detects a new unknown obstacle, it calculates the best way to bypass it.
